About Ontario’s FIT Program
Ontario's Feed-in Tariff or FIT Program is North America's first comprehensive guaranteed pricing structure for renewable electricity production. It offers stable prices under long-term contracts for energy generated from renewable sources, including:
- Solar photovoltaic (PV)
- On-shore and off-shore wind
- Water power
- Biomass (typically wood or wood waste)
- Biogas (produced by fermenting organics)
- Landfill gas (methane captured from landfill sites)
The FIT Program was enabled by the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009. The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) is responsible for implementing the program.
By encouraging renewable energy development, the FIT Program aims to:
- Help Ontario phase out coal-fired electricity generation by 2014
- Boost renewable energy technology development
- Create new green industries and jobs
Northland is actively seeking partnerships to develop projects that qualify for FIT contracts.
