Northland hires students in both secondary school and college co-op programs. Candidates must be in a relevant co-op program and have a genuine interest in working in the clean and renewable power generation industry. Preference is given to students with family living close to one of our operating facilities. Our co-op students will get first-hand exposure to the various operating jobs and routines at one of Ontario’s premier power generation facilities. Positions are available through school and college co-op programs in consultation with the facilities.

Certified millwrights, electricians and instrumentation technicians implement and manage Northland thermal site systems and maintenance programs, ensuring uptime and ISO compliance. Depending on their position in the plant organization, skilled tradespeople are involved with capital and maintenance budgets, vendor records, parts ordering and management, equipment upgrades, modelling and forecasting. Northland is focused on continuous improvement and innovation, so ideal candidates are individuals who are curious and able to see new ways to optimize uptime, safety and efficiency in an electricity generation facility.

Accounting managers supervise and support our data capture clerks and analysts and handle large one-off projects. They also work closely with project managers and developers for projects in development and manage banking and financing requirements and other details involved in projects in the advanced development and construction stages. Our managers are very comfortable with the large Excel models we use, even finding ways to enhance them. Ideal accounting managers have a professional designation and experience with financial reporting and budgeting, as well as being good people managers.

Northland relies on internal engineering expertise to develop new thermal, wind, solar and water power projects. Our engineers study potential opportunities and develop technical solutions to fit. They work with the latest technologies, key suppliers and project developers to build capital and operating cost estimates and create the business case for a PPA-winning design. Once a project proposal is accepted, our engineers manage the vendor selection and contracting processes and oversee construction to final approvals and start-up.
Northland engineers also leverage new technologies and processes to improve productivity and extend the economic life of existing plants.
We hire mechanical, process and chemical engineers with experience in the power, utility or process industries. Some join us with three to five years of experience, others with several years and capable of managing a complete project. New graduates interested in our field and willing to spend time at a new project site should also get in touch.

Analysts help Northland management monitor our operating plants and identify opportunities for improvement. They work closely with our plant managers, using large spreadsheet models to analyze production, forecast power generation and undertake special analysis on an ad hoc basis. Ideal candidates have a B.Comm. or equivalent university degree and an interest in power generation, are comfortable working with large-scale Excel models and enjoy analysis and the role of “accounting detective.” Many of our analysts are working toward CMA or CGA designations with Northland’s support.

Northland runs on facts—and it all starts here. Accountants are the people who input and process all the information we need to manage our operating plants. They also prepare cheques, reconcile bank statements, complete tax remittances and monitor cash flow and accounts payable. The ideal candidate has a two-year college diploma or equivalent experience, is conscientious and detail-oriented—and is willing to take action when he or she finds an error or something that doesn’t seem right.

TSSA-certified operating engineers keep Northland’s thermal plants running at peak efficiency and in compliance with all regulatory requirements. Shift engineers, shift supervisors, chief engineers and plant managers all have operating engineer tickets and varying levels of skills and experience. We prefer Class 2 and 3certified Operating Engineers with knowledge of all safety codes and experience in electricity generation using gas turbine generator sets, heat recovery steam generators and related equipment. Ideal Northlanders are willing to think and work independently and proactively to protect employee safety, quality and production and to spot improvement ideas.
